Lead Pipe to Copper Connection Failure In Brixton

Leak Detection 24/7 was contacted by a homeowner experiencing unexplained water loss and signs of dampness within their property. Following our specialist leak detection investigation, we traced the source of the problem to a failed temporary repair on a cold water supply pipe where an original lead pipe had previously been connected to copper pipework.

The Problem

The customer had noticed increased water consumption and signs of moisture developing within the bathroom area. Initial investigations suggested that the leak was concealed beneath the floor and was affecting the area around the shower tray.

As the leak was not visible, specialist leak detection techniques were required to accurately locate the source without causing unnecessary damage to the property.

Our Leak Investigation Process

Our engineer attended the property and carried out a series of non-invasive tests, including:

The investigation identified elevated tracer gas readings beneath the shower tray area, indicating a concealed leak on the incoming cold water supply.

FINDINGS

Following targeted intrusive access, the affected area was excavated to expose the pipework. The leak was traced to a failed temporary repair on the transition between the original lead water main and newer copper pipework.
The repair had deteriorated over time, allowing water to escape beneath the floor structure. The defect was clearly visible once exposed and was demonstrated to the customer on site.

Our Leak Investigation Process

To stop further water loss and prevent additional damage, a temporary repair was carried out immediately. The pipework was re-tested following the repair, and all results confirmed that the leak had been successfully isolated and repaired.

A final pressure test confirmed no further leakage was present at the time of attendance.

Repair Works Completed

Due to the age of the existing lead supply pipe, Leak Detection 24/7 recommended that the customer replace the entire lead water main with new MDPE (Medium Density Polyethylene) pipework.

Replacing lead pipework offers several benefits:

OUTCOME

The leak was successfully located and repaired with minimal disruption to the property. By using specialist leak detection equipment, we were able to pinpoint the exact location of the failure and avoid unnecessary excavation.
The customer was provided with a full leak detection report and recommendations for the future replacement of the lead supply pipe to ensure a long-term solution.
