High Water Bills At A Property In Chelsea, London
At Leak Detection 24/7, we were contacted by a homeowner in Chelsea, London, after they received several unusually high water bills over a short period. Thames Water had also contacted the customer to advise that their water meter was recording unexplained water usage during the early hours of the morning, even when the property was unoccupied.
Understandably concerned about the increasing bills and potential damage, the customer requested our non-invasive leak detection service to accurately locate the source of the leak before any excavation work was carried out.
Initial Investigation
Upon arrival, our engineer first discussed the customer’s concerns before carrying out a visual inspection of the entire property.
As part of our standard leak detection process, we performed a 45-minute pressure test on both the internal hot and cold water supplies.
The pressure remained completely stable throughout the test, confirming that all internal plumbing was fully sealed and that no leaks were present inside the property.
With the internal plumbing eliminated, attention turned towards the external incoming mains water supply.
Tracer Gas Leak Detection
Tracer gas is completely safe and allows us to identify underground leaks without causing unnecessary damage to driveways, patios or gardens.
Acoustic Leak Detection
To verify the findings, our engineer then deployed specialist acoustic leak detection equipment.
Using highly sensitive listening equipment, the sound of escaping water could clearly be heard beneath the driveway.
The acoustic survey confirmed that the leak was located precisely where the tracer gas readings had been identified.
Exposing The Leak
The customer authorised access to the highlighted area.
Once excavated, the original lead mains water pipe was exposed.
Inspection revealed a crack within the ageing lead pipe, which had been caused by years of ground movement placing pressure against the pipework.
The leak was shown to the customer before a temporary repair was completed to restore the water supply.
Due to the age and condition of the lead pipe, Leak Detection 24/7 recommended replacing the entire external water main using modern MDPE pipework, which offers significantly greater durability and complies with current water regulations.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Leak Detection 24/7 recommends replacing the existing lead water main with new MDPE pipework to prevent further failures.
Following replacement, a secondary pressure test should be completed to confirm the new pipework is fully sealed.
