Lead Pipe to Copper Connection Failure In Brixton
The Problem
The customer had noticed increased water consumption and signs of moisture developing within the bathroom area. Initial investigations suggested that the leak was concealed beneath the floor and was affecting the area around the shower tray.
Our Leak Investigation Process
Our engineer attended the property and carried out a series of non-invasive tests, including:
- Water supply pressure testing
- Acoustic leak detection
- Tracer gas leak detection
- Visual inspection of accessible pipework
The investigation identified elevated tracer gas readings beneath the shower tray area, indicating a concealed leak on the incoming cold water supply.
FINDINGS
- No leaks detected on hot or cold-water supply pipework
- Water meter remained static throughout testing
- eak identified on kitchen waste connection
- Moisture was travelling beneath vinyl flooring from the kitchen units
- Dampness was caused by an above-ground waste leak rather than a hidden underground leak
Our Leak Investigation Process
To stop further water loss and prevent additional damage, a temporary repair was carried out immediately. The pipework was re-tested following the repair, and all results confirmed that the leak had been successfully isolated and repaired.
A final pressure test confirmed no further leakage was present at the time of attendance.
Repair Works Completed
Due to the age of the existing lead supply pipe, Leak Detection 24/7 recommended that the customer replace the entire lead water main with new MDPE (Medium Density Polyethylene) pipework.
- Reduced risk of future leaks
- Improved water flow and pressure
- Modern, durable materials
- Compliance with current water industry standards
- Elimination of ageing lead pipe infrastructure
